As much fun as the holiday season is for families, it can also be stressful and not just for adults. I’ve noticed that for the last week or so my boys have had shorter tempers than usual as they prepare for Christmas concerts at school, rush around to their final activities before the holiday break and create crafts, cards and gifts for loved ones.
And honestly, I have just as much trouble staying mellow lately. Between cleaning the house for the holidays, planning visits from family and friends and cooking up treats, I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.
But I do have a few simple tips for reducing stress during the holidays, and these are my top three!
There’s nothing better than a soothing scent to help reduce stress. My personal favourite aroma when in the mood for relaxation is lavender but since it is the holiday season, I tend to favour more festive relaxation at this time of year!
Vanilla, cinnamon and orange are all aromatherapy oils that are used to help reduce stress, and all are also common aromas during Christmas! When the entire household is feeling irritable, I’ll combine a few drops each of vanilla and cinnamon essential oil in a diffuser to fill the whole house with the peaceful, soothing scent.
And when I just need a bit of balance myself, rubbing a drop of essential oil on my neck just behind my ears lets me enjoy the benefits of the aroma all day long.
The nice thing about homeopathic stress relievers is that many of them are appropriate for children as well as adults. I love the variety of homeopathic stress solutions from Orange Naturals and the Sleep Tight for Kids is especially wonderful at a time of year when giddy Christmas wishes have my boys lying awake far more than usual.
For one of my own coping mechanisms for stress, the Stress+Calm homeopathic formula is ideal. After just a dose or two, I’m notice that I’m less edgy and irritable. As an added bonus, I’ve found that this homeopathic is also a great treatment for relieving my monthly PMS anxiety!
While some people may find that a long, hard workout helps to relieve their stress, I prefer a more gentle approach.
For one thing, since my stress is often most acute when I’m feeling rushed, spending a whole hour working out just doesn’t make sense. For another, I find that slow, rhythmic exercise is more relaxing for me anyways.
Yoga is my personal favourite choice for relieving stress quickly. Taking ten minutes to work through some basic poses while breathing deeply leaves me feeling so much more calm and collected.
A quick walk outdoors is also a great choice, since the fresh air and scenery are instant mood boosters.
