With my oldest soon turning nine, I’ve realized that it will likely soon be time to find him a cell phone of his own. For the moment he gets by without one just fine since we live in a small town. He can walk or bike anywhere he needs to go, he knows the house number if he needs to call me while he’s out and his circle of friends is small enough that the parents all have each other’s phone numbers anyways.
But soon Zackary will be reaching the point at which a smartphone becomes a device for social interaction as much as for phone calls. Texting is a huge communication form for his generation and not being able to join in means that he will potentially be left out of activities planned through text. And as if that wasn’t enough of a motivation, my boys and I are moving later in the year as well. Zackary doesn’t really need a phone in a town as small as ours, but our new home is going to be in a significantly bigger area.
The problem, of course, is that even though I know my kids having phones one day is inevitable, I’m not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on one. As careful as my oldest son is with his electronics, I know how easy it is for accidents to happen and the idea of having to replace an expensive smartphone for my child just doesn’t sit well with me. That’s why I was so excited to learn that Alcatel OneTouch, one of the top ten phone manufacturers in the world, had recently come to Canada.
Alcatel OneTouch provides affordable and functional tablets and smartphones that are perfect for anyone that wants all the benefits of a high-quality Android device without spending a fortune. I received the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2S smartphone and the Alcatel OneTouch Pop 7 3G tablet so that I could check out the devices for myself, and I couldn’t wait to put them to the test.
While I currently use a Windows phone, I was a dedicated Android user before I switched so I understand and love the platform already. It’s versatile, user-friendly and offers a variety of apps that make it appropriate for kids and adults alike. The Idol 2S and Pop 7 run the Android Jelly Bean operating system, which is very simple to navigate and customize as desired. One of my favourite features of the operating system is the fun widgets that can be added to the devices along with the apps. My personal favourite is the Weather widget that ensures the current weather is always displayed on my home screen.
But in addition to a user-friendly operating system, the tablet and smartphone contain a bevy of other features that make them a great choice for anyone on a budget that still wants high functionality. The Idol 2S boasts an 8MP camera, a large 5-inch screen and HD sound, so whether you want to capture special moments or rock out to your favourite tunes, it’s up for the job. And the Alcatel OneTouch Pop 7 contains a 2MP camera, a vibrant HD display and a thin, lightweight design that makes it perfect for entertainment on the go.

the tablet so my daughter can use it at college
I’m excited to try the phone because my ten year old has been asking for one and this seems to have tons of great features.
I would love the tablet! I would download a bunch of kindergarten apps and watch my Sons face as I presented it to him!
the Pop 7 3G tablet
Would love to try the Pop 7 3G tablet, it would be handy when I am away from home and don’t want to take my laptop with me.
I would love the tablet because I don’t have a computer at home and it would be much easier than using my cell phone.
like to try both but I really like the tablet for the 3g capabilities:)
Cellphone because my personal phone is so outdated (it’s not a smartphone! yikes!) and I want to be able to do what my friends do (stream videos, post pictures, etc)
I would love a new tablet. It looks great!
