As a parent, there are a few skills that I believe are essential to my boys’ proper development, so I’m passionate about ensuring they’re developing those skills. And in my mind, the absolute most essential skill to ensure a child’s future success is a love of learning. I use all kinds of different tricks, techniques and toys to make learning a fun and rewarding experience for my boys. That’s why LeapFrog products have always been a favourite in our home.
From the earliest baby days to the school years, LeapFrog has used innovative electronics to help kids gain proficiency in a variety of different areas, from math and science to reading and writing. And the brand new LeapStart system is the perfect example of why I’ve always loved the brand. The system uses a library of activity books that let kids have fun while developing STEM skills, problem solving, shape recognition and, of course, literary skills! I recently received the brand new LeapStart to review and Benjamin was only too happy to help me test it out.
The LeapStart system and books have four different levels ranging from Preschool to Grade One skill levels. While Benjamin just finished the first grade, I’ve seen only too well in the past how much children can regress during the lazy summer months so I was happy to have a way for him to work on the skills he learned over the last school year. The books also delved into a few areas that his grade work hadn’t covered yet, such as fractions, so he was able to both learn new things and practice old skills with the various books.
Like so many of the devices from LeapFrog, this system seems to work like magic. Benjamin chose a book, set it down on the LeapStart, opened it to his desired page and touched it with the pen to start playing. The system immediately recognized what book he was using and knew when he turned the page! I have to admit, I actually entertained myself for a bit just flipping pages and touching pictures as I wondered just how the LeapStart knew what I was doing!
Each book focuses on a key learning skill and topic and uses fun, kid-friendly activities to help children develop new skills. Benjamin learned how to recognized different planets and constellations as well as the basic controls on a space shuttle while working through activities in the Space Science book. And as an animal lover, he adored the pictures, sounds and activities in the Amazing Animals book! His personal favourite feature of the LeapStart system? Rewards! After completing some fun activities and games, the LeapStart informed him that he’d won a sticker. He loved flipping to the back of the book, choosing his favourite and sticking it on the reward page.
LeapFrog is so excited about the brand new LeapStart system that the company has put together a very special giveaway! One lucky Mommy Kat and Kids reader is going to win their very own LeapStart system and one LeapStart book, a $65 total value! To enter to win, just check out the fabulous library of LeapStart books and leave a blog comment about which one you think your child would most enjoy.
The LeapStart system is available for a starting price of just $39.99 in the United states and $49.99 in Canada. The system comes in two different styles so that older and younger kids can each have a LeapStart that suits them best and both systems work with any LeapStart book. If you have a child between two and seven years of age, this system is a must-have for all kinds of early learning skills. And since it folds up just like a book, it’s great for taking in the car on those summer road trips too. Visit the LeapFrog website to learn more and find a retailer near you. Then get ready for fun, laughter and learning that will last for years!
