Sayonara Summer Shandy Beer Recipe From Mommy Mixology

Being a mother is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also incredibly exhausting! And when you need a break, you could just pour a glass of wine when the kids are in bed and enjoy a few blissful, uninterrupted minutes of peace.

But why not indulge a little more, with a fancy cocktail that’s perfect for exactly the childhood moment that’s drained your energy, with a drink recipe from Mommy Mixology by Janet Frongillo?

mommy mixology cover artThis fun little cocktail recipe book features refreshing libations that will take you from pregnancy (mocktails anyone?) right up until school days with drinks for every possible insane mommy moment in between.

I received a copy of the book to review and not only is it full of tasty beverages, it’s also a very enjoyable read!

I loved the cute anecdotes that accompanied every recipe. From kids bursting out with overheard profanity to adults blurting out inappropriate questions, every disaster has a drink to accompany the moment in Mommy Mixology!

Since my boys are both leaving the house for school this year (though Benjamin’s playschool classes are only two days a week), the speed with which my boys are growing is something that’s been on my mind.

So, I decided to celebrate the passing of time with a “Sayonara” Summer Shandy Beer. Here’s Janet’s intro to the drink:

I was the youngest in my family. My oldest sister started college when I started kindergarten. (She refused to take me to any cool parties. Rude.) I always envisioned my mom kicking me over the fence into my neighbor’s yard to catch the bus and then doing a happy dance, singing, “Free at last!” off-key.

I know that’s not true, because I had an ache in the pit of my stomach the day my son left for kindergarten, and I recalled what my mom told me wistfully when he was born: “I swear I blinked and you were in kindergarten.”

It couldn’t be a bigger cliché, but it’s true what they say—when you’re a mom of young kids, the days are long but the years are short. I didn’t realize it until that first day of “real” school arrived.

Your baby is one, then two, then three…. “Sloooow down!” you want to scream. It’s like a snowball that rolls downhill, picking up momentum and getting bigger as it goes.

You hold your breath that when he rolls out of sight, he’ll be okay without you, as every bottle, diaper, and sleepless night seems more and more like a distant memory. Bottoms up, mama.

I picked this drink not just because it was appropriate for my feelings recently, but also because it was so easy.

With nothing more than equal parts of beer and lemonade and a cute lemon wheel for a garnish, my Sayonara Summer Shandy Beer was done and I was ready to sit back and toast the years’ speedy passing.

And what a sweet toasting it was; My Sayonara Summer Shandy beer was refreshing, light and guaranteed to make the time fly by faster than a little one’s childhood.

I loved the fun drink recipes in Mommy Mixology but I loved the enjoyable stories even more.

They were ones that any mother could appreciate, and now it’s so much fun to know that after finally coming to terms with that post-baby tummy, I can relax with a Muffintopmommy Mudslide or that when I finally finish that tiresome school supply shopping, I can kick back and relax with a School Supply Slammer.
