Fall is a season that’s always seemed to me to be one of preparation. Knowing the temperature will soon drop and the ground will be covered in snow reminds me of all the little household errands I need to do in order to be ready for winter. And part of that means making sure that my family and our belongings are safely stored away.

As much as I wish that winter wasn’t so close, I’d rather face it knowing that my doors and windows are sealed, my furnace is working properly and my family’s bicycles and toys are locked up safely. Checking batteries in smoke detectors is one of my fall safety chores.
Have the heater inspected as well as the duct work
We make sure we have enough salt/ice melt for any autumn snow we get! (That’s what happens when you live in Michigan!)

Now that fall has arrived and our windows will be closed most of the time, I will spend some time checking and re-setting all of our window locks. I will also check our outbuildings to be sure that doors and windows are secured; probably, I’ll have to go purchase some new Master padlocks to replace those that may have been weather-damaged or those that may have had a key misplaced.
I’m making sure there are fresh batteries in the flashlights and cleaning out the chimney.
