7 Reasons You Should Practice Daily Meditation

To say that we get overstimulated on a daily basis is an understatement. Digital media has taken over, and you can hardly turn a corner without running into some form of multimedia.

Despite being informed about everything and feeling enlightened, attention spans are diminishing and many are struggling to focus.

We seem to have lost the ability to switch off and just be. And that’s why it’s so important for us to find ways to get focused once more and switch off. Daily meditation can be a great way to do that.

Here are seven reasons why you should meditate every day:

1. Decrease Unnecessary Stress

Life seemed a lot easier a couple of years ago, when there was no such thing as a cell phone or the internet. Even with all the technological advances there are today, there isn’t anything that can relieve stress quite like meditation.

Stress is unavoidable, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be overwhelming. Practicing basic daily meditation won’t take away your stress, but it will allow you to manage it better and reduce your stress levels faster.

2. Control Your Emotions

Most of us have been in situations where our emotions got the better of us. In most cases, if we were more in control of our emotions, we might be able to prevent ourselves from saying or doing something we regret.

Most people would like to control their emotions better but when tempers flare, we tend to lose the control we have. Meditation helps you stay calm and think before you act or speak. You’ll still feel the emotions, but how you react to them is more tempered.

3. Learn New Skills Faster

Meditation is an amazing tool that you can use to develop your mind. If you don’t have any other reason for learning how to meditate than for the sake of learning a new skill, it would be enough.

Taking just a few minutes to meditate and clear your mind before starting a task can help you learn faster and master new skills more efficiently.

4. It Is Free

They say that the best things in life are free, and the same goes for meditation. Unlike going to the gym, which usually costs quite a bit of money, meditation won’t cost you a penny.

Like regular exercise is good for the body, meditation is good for the mind. And you don’t even have to leave your bedroom to get a good mental workout. In fact, you can do it anywhere you want.

5. Make Better Life Decisions

In the heat of the moment, we often make our decisions based on a rough calculation of survival. More often than not, these decisions are short-sighted and we don’t see the potential ramifications. When you meditate daily, you become more aware of your surroundings and the ripple effect your decisions can create.

It is as if you can see five or six moves ahead in a chess game. Your thoughts are more focused, especially when you find yourself in a tough spot.

6. Become Mindful and Aware

Digital communication has invaded our waking life, and it has become increasingly difficult for us to observe our thoughts properly. Maintaining a particular train of thought might also be a struggle due to diminished concentration skills.

Daily meditation can help you focus your mind and distinguish the thoughts that are only distracting from those that serve a purpose. It allows you to get back to the now, and takes you away from dwelling on the past or going down the maze of the improbable future.

7. Slow Down Your Daily Living Pace

Finally, meditation helps you to slow down. It’s common to feel like life going by too fast. One moment you are celebrating New Year’s, and the next you’re preparing Christmas dinner.

Our lives have become full because we can do almost anything immediately. Our waiting time is minimized and with this instant life, we pack our days to the brim only to find that there aren’t enough hours in the day for everything we want to do.

Daily meditation helps you to prioritize, let go of the things that aren’t important and focus on those that are, allowing you to slow down your daily pace.

Meditation isn’t just a fad practiced by monks high in the Himalayas. Nor is it just for an elite group of New York corporates. Meditation is truly beneficial to everyone and the sooner you start practicing it, the better off your life becomes.

You might be surprised to find how difficult it is to maintain focus at first, but you will soon come to realize the benefits meditation holds. You don’t need hours a day to meditate, but you will find that spending a little time on meditation will eventually mean you have more time to spend on things you love as your focus increases!

I believe that it must be extremely stressful for those of us who tend to get stressed, I consider myself fortunate that I’m pretty laid back, I doubt I’d have managed to have, and raise, 7 kids if I wasn’t.
