Just a month after my mom’s 60th birthday, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. My grandmother had passed away from the same disease when I was a child, so my mom’s diagnosis was a tough time for all her children and grandchildren.
After a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatment, she’s now looking and feeling great again. But far too many women aren’t so lucky. In fact, a fellow blogger I’ve chatted with since I first started my website recently passed away after her breast cancer reappeared for a third time.
That’s why I’m passionate about supporting breast cancer awareness and research, and I love it when companies join in the fight as well and find unique ways to contribute! Carpet One Floor & Home is one of those companies; for years now they’ve created a unique set of Welcome-a-Cure welcome mats each October that support the Breast Cancer Research Fund.
The 2’x3’ mats are washable with a rubber back for durability, and come in a variety of beautiful designs. Breast cancer runs in my family too, several relatives have died because of it, a cousin’s daughter died at 34 from what started as breast cancer, one of my daughter’s has survived breast cancer – fingers crossed please at the age of 35 and she has the gene, another of my daughters carries the gene too. Unfortunately not all of my 7 kids have been able to be genetically tested. That takes way too long in England and here too. In England they seem to think it doesn’t matter since my son is male – as if they don’t know that men can also get breast cancer too. Nearly forgot to tell you that if I was lucky enough to win I’d love to have the mat with the houses on it from The Scandinavian Collection – I’m afraid I couldn’t find a name for it.
I’m so sorry to hear that cancer has been such a big part of your family’s life, Elizabeth! Even though both my mother and grandmother had it, none of my five siblings have ever been offered testing either, though I’m the oldest at 38 so maybe at some point in the future the doctor will bring it up. I’m very thankful that as research continues, the outcome gets better and better for those that are diagnosed. And I like to believe a cure will be discovered in my lifetime!
