Basic Contouring Tutorial with the Glo Minerals Contour Kit from Skincare by Alana

April 2, 2016 by Kathryn 6 Comments

Since I didn’t wear a lot of makeup as a teenager and young adult, I’ve become a big fan of trying new makeup trends in my thirties. While I don’t go too wild with bright colours or edgy trends (no black lips for this woman), I do like seeing how the season’s hottest looks can be made more wearable for everyday style. From a dramatic smoky eye on date night to a perfect nude makeup look for daytime, I’ve mastered a few stylish trends over the years. But one technique that I’d never tried and always wanted to was contouring.

Luckily, Skincare by Alana recently came to the rescue and gave me the chance to test out the technique! This fantastic online boutique features an extensive line of cosmetics, skincare and more at great prices. My skin can be a bit finicky so mineral makeup is my go-to when I want to try a new look without worrying about my skin reacting with breakouts or sudden redness. And to my delight, Skincare by Alana offered a Glo Minerals Contour Kit that looked like it would be perfect for trying contouring for the first time.

Look Your Best and Pamper Your Skin with Natural Cosmetics from Mia Mariu-Giveaway

October 8, 2013 by Kathryn 115 Comments

I am a little bit makeup obsessed and love trying new colours and brands of products to keep my look current. But I also have quite finicky skin, so when I choose makeup, it has to be from a brand that offers gentle, natural ingredients that nourish. I have a few favourites already, but finding more choices is always something that gets me excited.

So when Mia Mariu contacted me to review its line of mineral-based cosmetics made with natural, healthy ingredients, I was pretty excited. I received a Mia Mariu Colours For Your Every Mood set containing the Uniquely You Touch Up Kit, which sounded like it would be ideal for a fresh new look that wouldn’t cause breakouts or skin irritation, and three Hydrating Stick Gloss lip shades. I couldn’t wait to create my perfect look.

Create Lovely Light and Dramatic Dark Makeup Looks with the New Pur Minerals Beautiful Creatures Collection

February 1, 2013 by Kathryn 11 Comments

The highly anticipated film Beautiful Creatures will be hitting theatres on February 14 and my very favourite cosmetics company, Pur Minerals, is celebrating with a gorgeous special edition set inspired by the movie.

I recently received the Pur Minerals Beautiful Creatures Collection to review and I couldn’t wait to use it to create some fun new looks.

The set contains eight spellbinding eye shadow shades ranging from innocently light choices to captivating dark colours, Lust lip gloss and Black Magic eyeliner. I decided to check out the Pur Minerals Beautiful Creatures website and create a look based on one of the characters from the movie.

New Pur Minerals Perfect Fit Eye Shadow Trios are Makeup Made Easy

August 20, 2012 by Kathryn 10 Comments

Last year I got the chance to try Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation and ever since I have been a Pur Minerals convert.

I absolutely adore this foundation; it provides amazing coverage and looks completely natural. I’ve tried a few other Pur Minerals products since that first experience and each time I’m impressed by how gentle the products are on my skin and how natural they look.

Perfect-Eye-Trio-Canyon-GlowNow, just in time for fall, Pur Minerals has an incredible new line of Perfect Fit Eye Shadow Trios and I received four of the new trios and a bottle of eye shadow primer to test out. While I mainly like Pur Minerals for its natural shades, I was excited to enjoy a bit of experimenting with some fun colours too! [Read more…]

Fall Beauty Products from Proactiv and Sheer Cover

October 17, 2011 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

The holiday season is just around the corner and I’m starting to check out a few of the newest beauty products for the upcoming holiday season. I’ve become a bit of a beauty junkie and if there’s one thing that’s sure to put a smile on my face, it’s testing out new cosmetics and beauty products. Lucky me; I got the chance to do just that thanks to some great new products from Proactiv and Sheer Cover.

proactiv concealer plusThe first item I received to test out was Proactiv Concealer Plus in Medium. I don’t have acne that’s severe enough that I’ve ever felt the need for the complete Proactiv system, but the idea of a concealer that helped fight my occasional breakouts was intriguing.

When I dabbed it onto my face, I found that it was more medication than concealer. It did have a bit of tint to make it blend in more than a traditional spot acne treatment would have, but it didn’t have the coverage that most concealers have. It did an amazing job of getting rid of my breakouts though! In addition to putting a tiny dab on my acne in the morning (usually with a dab of “real” concealer on top to blend it in), I also liked dabbing it on before I went to bed. Within 24 hours, my breakouts were always drastically minimized and sometimes gone altogether. It should be noted that this concealer is ONLY meant for breakouts. It is not meant to be used as an under eye concealer, to cover age spots or to even out skin tone.

sheer cover extra length mascaraI also received Sheer Cover Extra Length Mineral Mascara and I fell in love with it the first time I used it. It’s not dramatic nighttime mascara by any means, but for darker, longer and completely natural-looking lashes, this is the only mascara you need. I couldn’t believe how smoothly the mascara went on. It added extra darkness to my eyes, but like the mineral makeup that has made Sheer Cover so popular among women, it looked completely natural. For a daytime mascara, this is the only one I use.

Fall’s new beauty products from Proactiv and Sheer Cover are great ones to have in any beauty bag, even if you do use the concealer for spot acne treatments more than you use if for covering blemishes. Both products were effective and I loved how easy treating my breakouts was. If you’re looking for some fun new beauty products this year, check out the choices at Proactiv and Sheer Cover and say hello to natural-looking, blemish-free beauty!
